Is an Artist Rebelling Against the System Just What the System Wants?

We’re artists. The world seems terrible. We don’t want to be stuck in an open plan office. We want to hide and produce art. But what if escape, rebellion, and disillusionment have been co-opted by the system for its own purpose?

Writing Boring Stuff for Work

I haven’t posted lately as I’m currently neck-deep in the world’s  most boring form of writing: churning out articles about my work life so I can keep my certification. Which I don’t technically need to do my job, but it’s useful in terms of scoring a few more interviews than everyone else. The only down side is maintaining the certification. It’s painful. Each article only has to be around 1,500 words. That’s my daily output for my novel. For my articles, I’m lucky if I can get out a paragraph a day.

Mind you, it does highlight the fact that I’m not as into my career as I used to be. Taking a week or more to write 1,500 words and then taking days to agonize over the content isn’t how I wanted to spend my time. The only upside is that once I’ve finished them and they’ve been submitted, I don’t have to contemplate writing anything again for one or two years.

But yes, there is such a thing as boring writing. Writing ever more boring than tackling a paper for university. The level of disinterest is indicated by how much my internal voice begs me not to sit down at the keyboard every morning.

On the good side, I may have just discovered a way to tell if my story ideas are interesting or not....
